Scrollsaw Tip - Making Thin Stock
![]()
Thin stock is very nice for onlays and 1/32" stock is hard to find. Take a piece of 1/16" stock and stick it to piece of scrap wood with double sticky tape. Next, with a carbide flat-bottom slot cutter in your drill press, you can mill it to the proper thickness with two light passes. Be sure to leave a little so that you can sand it smooth since there will be some small swirl marks. A few passes with some sandpaper will remove them quickly. If you are going to glue this side down, you do not have to worry about getting every swirl mark out. You can mill it a little thinner if you wish; my material became very fragile at about 1/64".
If you do not have the power tools, you can still sand the stock to your desired thickness in a short time. This can be accomplished pretty easily. I use a T-bar sander clamped in my vise with the sandpaper up. If you do not have one of these, just secure the sandpaper to a flat surface. Next, stick your piece of stock to a board with double-sticky tape. Finally, sand, sand, sand. Finished!
